onX Hunt: Offline Hunting Maps is an app designed to assist hunters in navigating and planning their excursions by providing detailed mapping and land information. It offers GPS navigation, 3D maps, and comprehensive data on public and private land boundaries across the nation. A key feature is the ability to save Offline Maps, ensuring access to critical details regardless of cellular service, alongside tools for marking crucial locations and understanding terrain. The app supports a range of functions from pre-hunt research to in-field execution, aiming to enhance decision-making and awareness during a hunt.
Pre-Hunt Planning and Research
The app provides a suite of tools for preparing for the hunting season and scouting locations. Users can access Hunt Research Tools to review draw odds, tag trends, and harvest statistics, though some of these research capabilities are available on desktop. For detailed scouting, the app allows users to check property lines and view private land boundary maps, including landowner names, which is available for the U.S. only. It also helps identify GMUs, Hunting Units, public land, and state land hunting maps. To understand the terrain, users can switch between 3D Lidar Topo, Satellite, and Hybrid Basemaps. Elite members can also access expert research from Huntin’ Fool and set reminders for application deadlines.
In-Field Navigation and Collaboration
Once in the field, onX Hunt assists with navigation and group coordination. It features live, session-based Location Sharing, allowing users to see their partners’ movements. The app includes a built-in GPS and Compass Mode to maintain bearings, and a Tracker function to record the user’s path. Localized weather forecasts can be monitored directly within the app. Users can mark crucial locations using Waypoints and add Markups for specific details. Terrain analysis tools are available, and state-specific Map Layers can be utilized to research conditions, access points, wildlife, trees, and soil. Collaboration is also supported through the sharing of Hunt Areas and Tracks with other devices on the same platform, and Optimal Wind conditions can be set on any Waypoint.
Compatible Tool Integrations
The app supports integration with several external tools to enhance its utility. Users can display maps directly on their vehicle’s dash via Android Auto. For precise location marking, Waypoints can be dropped automatically by syncing with compatible rangefinders and binoculars. Trail cameras can be connected to view images in real-time and receive key insights. Additionally, users can mark their current location from their wrist using Wear OS devices.
Access and Membership
To access all features listed, including nationwide land boundaries, 3D maps, and advanced research tools, a Premium Membership is required. This membership grants full feature access within a single chosen state or Canada. It is important to note that certain detailed features, such as landowner names, are specific to the U.S. only.
